Temple Dogs

Chinese Temple Dogs have a long, celebrated history of guarding a temple or home from harmful elements. The Fu Dog (pronounced 'foo') originated in China over 3,000 years ago and is believed to be from the ancient city of Fuzhou. 'Fu' means happiness in Chinese and a pair Fu or 'lion dogs' are placed at the front door, mouth facing away from the door to ward off evil spirits according to Chinese legend. One pair consists of a matching male and female Fu dog. The male's left foot is raised and rests upon a round sphere, protecting the occupants worldly possessions and success. The female's right foot is raised and rests on the belly of a baby Fu - protecting the home and family. When placed together, with each raised foot on the inside, the Fu dog family provides safety for the world and family.

Several 'styles' of Fu dogs are produced, and are a matter of individual taste. Prices range widely depending on the size, stone, and style and age. While there are many affordable selections, serious collectors may pay more than $10,000 for a rare and unique pair. Silk Road Gathering is available to assist you in your selection.
